Working with a therapy dog, also called animal assisted therapy, is an option for any client who is interested. Animal assisted therapy involves having an animal in therapy sessions to enhance treatment outcomes.
Interacting with a therapy dog has many benefits including increasing motivation, providing comfort, and reducing stress and anxiety. Research has shown that petting an animal:
Increases oxycotin, an endorphin responsible for relaxation and bonding to others
Lowers cortisol, a stress hormone
Can create a sense of safety
Lowers blood pressure
